Cairde na hEaragaile CLG have secured a contract with Wild Atlantic Nature LIFE IP to deliver a pilot Peatland Restoration Project with a particular focus on Rhododendron control

The first part of this project involves the surveying and mapping of the Dunlewey area for the presence and density of Rhododendron Ponticum. This map will help us to develop an action plan to tackle this non-native, invasive species.  This survey will be completed by May 2024.

The second part of the project is to recruit and train 4/6 people in the control of the plant and to employ them on a part-time basis for approximately 3 months to undertake Pilot Rhododendron control works.

Those recruited under this project will be provided with full training, which will include:

  • Chainsaw maintenance

  • Felling & processing of small trees

  • Pesticide Application

  • Manual Handling

  • Safe pass

  • First Aid + Forestry

Watch this video made by the Pearl Mussel Project and North Connemara EIPs explaining the different methods of Rhododendron Control. These methods have bee trialed over many years in Killarney National Park and are demonstrated by Peter O’Toole of Killarney National Park.

Do you have land that is affected by Rhododendron and are you interested in being part of the pilot?
